For sale is a rare vintage Gibson Explorer 1978 guitar owned by Peter Keys (member of Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Peter mentioned Rickey Medlocke had checked out and played this guitar as well. Overall we would describe this as a great playing and sounding guitar, and in very nice cosmetic condition for its age. Our in-house guitarist checked it out and has the following notes:
- Based on the serial number it was completed on Thursday, June 8th, 1978.
- No cracks or breaks that I could find
- Very clean for the age, light finish checking/dings/playing wear
- Some finish hazing around neck joint and around the body in general
- Electronics appear to be factory original
- Truss rod nut has plenty of room to move
- It appears the bridge pickup is possibly a T-Top based on a resistance measurement of 7.5k, it could also be a Tar-back, unable to confirm as the pickup has a cover, also unable to remove the pickup from the body to check the underside and did not want to risk damaging it.
- The neck pickup is a Tar-back
- Plastic parts appear to be original and age correct
- unknown signature in sharpie on the back
- Case appears to be original, has broken central latch, still works fine
- Weighs approximately 8lbs
We are not a guitar speciality shop so please do your own inspection of the photos and ask questions before purchase. We cannot make 100% guarantee accuracy with regards to specifics or it's full condition or originality, the above is just our best assessment.
